Chapter Twelve

Lately it seemed rare that I had to venture into the human world, but my friend, Mayor Barbara Flaggstaff, called for lunch. I headed out to City Hall to meet her. Barbara had been the one to appoint me to City Council but unfortunately had to bow to pressure to rescind my appointed seat. I didn't blame her. Now, she encouraged me to run for the new elected version of my seat. She knew the politics involved regarding me and also knew the income brought into the city by Bang's.

Of course, it was my luck to run into Councilman Glenn Grove. Glenn had always been my adversary and a natural-born, plain old woman hater. He was in a gloating mood today, as it was his doing that got my seat rescinded.

"Romere," he greeted, gleefully omitting the Councilmember title. "It's so good to see you. But I thought you'd never again venture into daylight."

It was rude, even for him.

"I'd hoped to not see you again," I answered, quite civilly.

His eyebrows raised. "Then why are you hanging out on my side of town? There's no blood-suckers here."

I harrumphed. "I beg to differ."

He smiled at the insult, thin lips separating to show small, yellow smoker's teeth. "We voted to suspend meetings for the summer, you know."

"Why? That's never been done before."

"No reason to meet monthly. There's no one around to be contrary now. So I agreed to a temporary suspension. Makes it all the sweeter when we return because I get to bring up my usual issue."

I knew what it was. As long as Grove was a Councilmember, he had one thing on his agenda. To shut down Bang's.

The door to Barbara's office opened and she stepped out into the hallway.

"Afternoon, Madam Mayor," he said.

"Grove," she said waspishly. "Anjelia, my dear, I'm so sorry I have to cancel our lunch. Something has come up."

"It's fine, Barbara. Don't you worry about it."

"Before I run, though, I just need to mention one thing. To be fair regarding the rescinding of your council seat, I managed to get a special election approved yesterday. That will give you ample opportunity to run for your old seat on City Council. You have two months to campaign and the election will be in September, just in time to get you reinstated for our next council meeting which will resume at the end of summer. So far there are no others running, although this 'special' election has been diligently advertised."

Grove's face filled with furious indignation. Barbara smiled grimly. "Good luck, my dear. I'll call to reschedule our lunch."

Barbara's shoes clacked against the tile floor as she turned on her heel.

I turned to a red-faced Grove. "See you sooner than later, Glenn."

It was the first time I used his first name. Smiling sweetly, I walked down the same hallway that Barbara had disappeared down.

My good mood was short-lived, however. As I turned down an office corridor, I recognized several city personnel that I'd worked with. Most avoided my eyes, as if no one wanted to be seen talking, or even looking at me.
